One of the aims of the cadet programme is to promote physical fitness. Cadets can join running team to help develop strength. The Medicine Hat team also competes annually at the Medicine Hat Rattler Run! |

Every now and then our corps are given the opportunity to fire weapons on a secured range. After successfully passing a firearms precaution test, cadets can fire daisy air rifles, anschutz, Lee Enfields and, at Summer Training Centers, even the C7. There are marksmanship competitions for corps to compete against each other. |

Drill is a large component in the cadet programme. It helps develop self-discipline and accuracy. Although it is regularly practiced on cadet nights, the drill team practices its routines on other nights. This is because their sequence has little or no commands. It's all silent drill. It's quite a site! |

Biathlon is really fun and quite simple. Biathlon is a sport that combines cross-country skiing with marksmanship. To simulate cross-country skiing during practice, the team uses skate skis. The sport of biathlon consists of many aspects of Army Cadet training, including shooting, patrolling, physical fitness and endurance. Joining the biathlon program involves a commitment to attend training sessions. Two teams, one male and one female will be selected to attend provincials in Canmore. Teams must have at least one junior member to qualify, so younger cadets have as much of a chance to quality as the seniors. |

2313 SALH RCACC (Kiwanis) offers a pipes and drums band that cadets can join and learn how to play instruments and such. The pipe band is in its fifth year and is progressing quite rapidly. The following is a brief description on instruments that can be played: Bagpipes: All the hard work you put into the instrument really pays off. On our practice night, you play on a chanter with an instructor until you are ready to challenge the pipes themselves. Tenor: A very popular instrument, the tenor is the show of the band. It is a drum that the player spins their mallets around while playing the drum. Very fun to learn and play. Side: The side is the snare drum in the pipe band. Learn interesting rhythms and sounds on the practice pads, and then progress onto playing the snare itself. All cadets are encouraged to join the band, even if you have little or no experience. The South Alberta Pipes and Drums band provides excellent instruction in all of the previously mentioned instruments. There is a fee for a practice chanter and tutor book, if you want to learn to play the bagpipes. |

Every now and again we venture out into the bush. We train on things from how to tie a simple thumb knot, to lighting a Coleman stove, to how to use a map and compass. The field excercises are the bread and butter of the Army Cadets organization, and what separates us from the other elements. Army Cadets always look forward to going into the field. |
